Route 66 Marathon
November 18, 2012
Ron Wahula

Background: I chose the Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa Oklahoma because it fell after the Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon and because Hardin Watkins was doing the full and Maureen Bowen was running the half as her 50th Half Marathon State. I also was involved in a bet with Eric Johnson on who could run the fastest time in our “designated” marathon. The weather forecast called for low 40’s at the race start going up to the low 60’s during the race – perfect running weather. It was a big windy though, with consistent winds up to 15 mph in the latter stages of the race.

Expo: The Expo was pretty big will lots of non-running related vendors. The race shirt was short sleeve - not that impressive. The best part of the Expo were the classic cars that really gave you the Route 66 vibe. [More]

Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon

For me, this was not a race to write home about, but I'm trying to be diligent in my race reports.

THE GOOD:
I woke up at 5am on race day for the 7am race to the sound of heavy rain on the roof. Oh Crap! I got up and checked the weather map and thankfully, it looked like that was going to be the end of it. And a few minutes later it did end and the weather for the race was going to be good for the race... and it was beautiful. During the race, I got support and cheers from so many of the folks that I run with throughout the year and that really means a lot, particularly when you're struggling. I also like the crowds on this race. They are also great encouragement. [More]

What a day! And what a race! I was reading the Facebook page comments and this is now a favorite race for some runners out there! Great job! I just wanted to say a big "THANK YOU" to YOU and EVERYONE at Raleigh Galloway. I began training in May on the first day with Pam, then trained with Ashby, Meri and Jafarr in the 13's and on and off with the 12:30's until the ridiculous heat kicked in this summer. I was most comfortable with Ashby's group though. [More]

Mankato Marathon
“Bold Race, Exceptional Place”
October 21, 2012
Rob Hall

I joined Hardin Watkins and his wife Liz Jackson for a chance to run the Mankato Marathon on Sunday, October 21, 2012. We left Raleigh by plane on Saturday morning and made it to Minneapolis, MN around noon. We then drove down to Mankato with a stop at Emma Krumbees Apple Orchard in Belle Plaine, MN for the Scarecrow Festival. It gave us a chance to carb up on deserts and apples along the way. Mankato is about an hour and a half from the airport. [More]

Last weekend, I missed the run because I was racing a half marathon in Black Mountain. It is a beautiful scenic course with beautiful weather (it was 50 degrees my whole run). [More]
